The federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) was established under the Employee Retirement and Income Security Act of 1974 to take over the payment of pension benefits in cases where certain types of private-company pension plans have gone bankrupt or have otherwise ceased operations. The PBGC maintains a Pension Search Directory which offers a quick way to determine if you are owed pension benefits from a private plan now administered by the PBGC. The PBGC also has several publications available on-line, including A Predictable, Secure Pension for Life: Defined Benefit Pensions. Note, however, that the booklet Finding a Lost Pension, by the PBGC and the Pension Action Center, is available in an easier-to-access web format from BenefitsLink, listed below.
The Pension Rights Center, a Washington, D.C. based non-profit organization provides consumers with information and help with pension problems.
The Women’s Institute for Secure Retirement (WISER) has many on-line fact sheets on pension topics, including issues that especially affect women.
BenefitsLink is a web site with a lot of technical information, primarily targeted for companies and pension professionals. One publication of general interest available through BenefitsLink is Finding a Lost Pension (by the Pension Action Center and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation).
